Hey I'm Chilton Webb.
I'm a game and software developer with over 3 decades of professional programming experience, currently specializing artificial intelligence. This site is a showcase for my current and past projects, and a teeny tiny bit of an advertisement for my services. So here's a little about me, and what I do. And if after reading it, you think I might be able to help you with something, get in touch!
But first, try out some of the stuff I've already built. See what you think. And let me know if you have any questions!
Why Work With Me?
I don't just write code. I design and build solutions that last. Throughout my 35-year career, I've shipped over a thousand apps, websites, web apps, articles, movies, games, rides, hardware and software solutions. My work spans multiple industries and technologies, languages and platforms, giving me an intimate knowledge of multiple domains. Programming is my life, and I love it.

I officially began my career writing software for Texas A&M's USTS Texas Clipper, while at sea. My second freelance client was AutoDesk, writing a control system for AutoCAD to control industrial CNC machines. And then I paid my way through school by writing and selling software in campus book stores across the state of Texas. The entrepreneurial spirit drove me to innovate early and often.
In the 90's, I created some of the first internet setup kits for ISPs, sold a few games as shareware, created a ton of art for a massive collaborative game called Morgana's Revenge, and started one of the largest ISP centric websites, helping thousands of ISPs all over the world navigate the political and legal landscape of the emerging Internet. For the ISP Resource Page, I started a weekly "internet radio show", which was an early type of podcast.

Shortly after that, I started the first major Mac centric developer site, DevHQ, hosted free weekly developer classes online, and spoke at a number of conferences and computer meetups across Texas. At the time I sold DevHQ to CMP Media, it contained the largest open source code archive on the Internet. During that time, I also wrote programming articles for MacAddict, MacWorld, and Dr. Dobb's Journal.
I've always tried to be at the forefront of technology trends.

My technical accomplishments include patents ranging from wireless flat screen displays to medical imaging, software that can analyze other software and tell you how it works, rendering tech used in amusement park rides, motion capture solutions that span every major VR platform, reverse engineering software and viruses, tracking down stolen crypto, helping the blind see with sound, and testifying in Federal Court on a RICO cybercrime case. And I'm just getting started!
Generally speaking, if I make something for public consumption, I charge for it. Why? It keeps me honest. It's a contract betweeen me and you, that says you're going to give up some money you made with your time, in exchange for some software I made with my time. And I promise to make sure you get your money's worth.
So I am constantly, daily, improving my skills and my abilities, to solve complex problems with increasingly elegant and modern solutions. Again, this is what I do for work, and what I do for fun.

For the past 15 years, I've focused largely on augmented reality, virtual reality, game development, freelance work, and AI, helping clients turn their most challenging problems into engaging and enjoyable solutions. I take pride in delivering high-quality, maintainable code that stands the test of time.

Today, I still do custom, freelance programming, but I have less free time for it now. That's why I heavily vet projects before I start one. I have to be selective about the work I take on to ensure I can deliver my absolute best for every client I work with.
So let's talk about what I can do for you!
My Rates
My rates are pretty simple:
Weird, Easy Stuff
It needs to be a simple project, or a project where some part of it is needed now, but the rest is ambiguous and not pressing. This is a rare project, and I must really really love the idea if I take on something in this price range.
Standard Projects
This covers almost everything else. I prefer well-defined milestones with this payment structure.
Considerable Effort
For projects requiring a significant amount of my time and expertise.
Undivided Attention
When you need my complete focus and priority commitment.
Work Ethos
I do not do net 30 or more under any conditions. That's a relic of the ancient days where we did not have the ability to move money around quickly. If you want my attention and mental energy, you need to be paying for it. If I have to find another client to pay my bills while I work on your project, that's not fair to me or the other client.
Similarly, I seldom do payment on delivery. You are, basically, renting my skills and expertise. While you are paying me, I will work on your product.
Regardless of the scope of work, I typically ask for $2k up front, with well defined milestones. That's all. It's a goodwill gesture that tells me you've got some skin in the game. When I work, I tend to do my best work with no distractions, so don't be surprised if I'm hard to get ahold of, that means I'm moving things forward. I love to talk to people, and I love social media. But that doesn't get the work done.
I will work on pretty much anything if the price is right. But I will not:
- write software that will harm people
- write accounting software
Languages and Platforms?
Languages and platforms are tools to achieve a result. And much line physical tools, they don't always work for every job. A lot of problems demand custom, platform specific solutions. Some things require a cross platform engine. I'll help you navigate that universe, and find the right tool for the job.

Ready to Get Started?
I'm always interested in hearing about challenging new projects. If you have a problem that needs solving or an idea that needs implementing, I'd love to hear about it.
And if I'm not the right guy for the job, I'll let you know. And I'll give you a list of other developers you might want to talk to!
Please contact me if you have any questions or would like to discuss a project!
